  • DON’T SET LIVE TRAPS DURING BABY SEASON. PLEASE.

Yes, it’s baby season and we understand you don’t want raccoons, skunks, squirrels, groundhogs, bats or any other critter living in your space!  Goodness knows our space is more precious now than ever before. Our homes have become our places of work, play, school and our sanctuary. It’s where we keep busy and where we relax.  It where we socialize virtually. And we want our homes and our yards and property to be a peaceful, happy, productive area – especially now with the nice weather. Hard to do when all you can hear is squeaking and squawking in your attic or can’t let your pets or kids outside to play because there’s a skunk living under your shed or deck! Oh, we know all about it. But here’s the thing - if you live trap the mother animal and take her away then her babies can’t survive without her.  If you cap your chimney the babies will die in your chimney. If you cover the hole in your roof or soffit her babies will die in your attic and the mother may very well do a lot of damage trying to get back inside your house any way she can! Yes, they are very maternal – especially raccoons. That’s why calling a wildlife removal and pest control professional is so important especially during baby seasons. We have processes and solutions to take care of your wildlife issues and we offer preventive measures to avoid future invasions. A raccoon will usually have a litter of 3-5 baby raccoon pups. The most common reason for a raccoon to enter an attic and choose to live there is the case of a female who needs a safe place to give birth and raise its babies. If you have blocked the mother out – or trapped her – check for nipples! If you can see them, you’ve got babies up there, and they’ve got to be found and removed or they will starve to death – and you will hear them chirping non-stop for their mother. It’s also very common for Squirrels to nest and have their litters in attics. Skunks and groundhogs will often dig holes and have their litters under decks and sheds. We have affordable solutions for all of this.  Contact Gunning Wildlife Removal & Pest Control 519-421-2677 or text 289-987-0390 or message us through our website www.gunningwildliferemoval.ca If you are going to tackle the issue yourself, please remove the babies first before you close off any entry points. Don’t set live traps in direct sunlight or near swimming pools and check your trap daily so the animal does not die in the trap. Release the animal where you caught it so the mother and babies will find each other and in case they have disease you are not spreading it into new animal populations. We hope this helps and feel free to contact us even if just to ask some questions about your wildlife problem.  We’re pleased to serve Woodstock, London, Brantford, Kitchener-Waterloo, Stratford and surrounding areas and we’re here to help you!

  • Skunks in your yard? Call Gunning Wildlife Removal!

SKUNKS can dig for grubs in lawns and garden and burrow under decks, sheds and porches. They can also cause damage to buildings and expensive landscaping! They can spray their scent gland up to 15 feet and their odour can remain on pets for weeks or months! Skunks can carry the rabies virus and not ‘look’ infected – so beware! Skunks breed in February through April with a gestation period of approximately 63 days producing 1 litter per year with 3-9 kits per litter. Baby skunks keep their eyes closed for first 21 days and remain in the den for the first 6-8 weeks. After this time the young will venture out at night with the mother to forage with her. kunks are nocturnal animals. They are usually silent but can produce a bird-like noise. Their life span is between 5-10 years. • Pesky Birds?

With the recent CBC article regarding a product used to treat pesky birds in London, Ontario we wanted to reassure our customers that we do not use this product. The manufacturer indicates that when used in the appropriate dose it should not be fatal to birds therefore no concerns regarding secondary poisoning. However this product may be banned in some areas. We’ve had calls from concerned consumers wondering if we use pesticides to treat bird issues. We do not. There are humane ways to treat bird issues with netting, spikes noise makers and other tactics to make the bird uncomfortable and causing them to leave the affected area.

  • Winter Weather

Hopefully you’ve taken all measures to ensure your roof is ready for this winter weather! Did it need to be reinforced, re-shingled, new flashing? Have you cleaned out your gutters? Whatever steps you’ve taken were well worth it now that the snow has fallen and will melt exposing leaks. Not to mention weak areas where wildlife and pests may enter your home. Wildlife removal experts – much like roofers – are tough but sometimes winter conditions simply don’t allow them to get on your roof. The good news is raccoons and squirrels aren’t having babies this time of year so if they did manage to enter through your roof or eaves they won’t be multiplying in there. Mice and rats however breed year round so you will want to take care of these pests! With the cold winter weather comes many extra things for us to think about. Above all, be ready to check on family and neighbors who are especially at risk from cold weather hazards: young children, older adults, and the chronically ill. If you have pets, bring them inside. If you cannot bring them inside, provide adequate, warm shelter and unfrozen water to drink. Gunning Wildlife Removal & Pest Control provides affordable pest control and humane removal of wildlife from homes, businesses and properties. We serve Southwestern Ontario including Woodstock, London, Brantford, Kitchener, Waterloo,Stratford and surrounding areas. • Rabies in Ontario

In Ontario the most common animals to be affected by rabies are bats, foxes, skunks and raccoons. Once signs of rabies appear, in any animal, the disease is fatal. Dumb rabies causes animals to become depressed and isolate themselves.  They may have paralyses causing drooling, drooping head, sagging jaw or strange vocal sounds. Furious rabies on the other hand causes animals to be extremely excited and aggressive.  They may gnaw or bite its own body or limbs and attack other animals for no reason. If you or someone you know is bitten by an animal or if infectious material (such as saliva) from an animal gets into your eyes, nose, mouth, or broken skin, wash the area immediately and thoroughly with lots of soap and water. Washing immediately can greatly reduce the risk of infection. Contact your doctor or your local public health unit immediately, as they can help determine your risk of exposure to rabies. A series of vaccinations and treatment with rabies antibodies can prevent infection in humans in most cases if administered soon after exposure. Contact your veterinarian for information on when and how often to vaccinate your pets. The first booster vaccine for rabies is always due 12 months after the animal’s initial vaccine (this is called the “primary series”), but after that a rabies vaccine (“booster shot”) is only needed every one to three years, depending on the vaccine used.
