- Skunks in your yard? Call Gunning Wildlife Removal!
SKUNKS can dig for grubs in lawns and garden and burrow under decks, sheds and porches. They can also cause damage to buildings and expensive landscaping! They can spray their scent gland up to 15 feet and their odour can remain on pets for weeks or months! Skunks can carry the rabies virus and not ‘look’ infected – so beware! Skunks breed in February through April with a gestation period of approximately 63 days producing 1 litter per year with 3-9 kits per litter. Baby skunks keep their eyes closed for first 21 days and remain in the den for the first 6-8 weeks. After this time the young will venture out at night with the mother to forage with her. kunks are nocturnal animals. They are usually silent but can produce a bird-like noise. Their life span is between 5-10 years. - Pesky Birds?
With the recent CBC article regarding a product used to treat pesky birds in London, Ontario we wanted to reassure our customers that we do not use this product. The manufacturer indicates that when used in the appropriate dose it should not be fatal to birds therefore no concerns regarding secondary poisoning. However this product may be banned in some areas. We’ve had calls from concerned consumers wondering if we use pesticides to treat bird issues. We do not. There are humane ways to treat bird issues with netting, spikes noise makers and other tactics to make the bird uncomfortable and causing them to leave the affected area.

- Winter Weather
Hopefully you’ve taken all measures to ensure your roof is ready for this winter weather! Did it need to be reinforced, re-shingled, new flashing? Have you cleaned out your gutters? Whatever steps you’ve taken were well worth it now that the snow has fallen and will melt exposing leaks. Not to mention weak areas where wildlife and pests may enter your home. Wildlife removal experts – much like roofers – are tough but sometimes winter conditions simply don’t allow them to get on your roof. The good news is raccoons and squirrels aren’t having babies this time of year so if they did manage to enter through your roof or eaves they won’t be multiplying in there. Mice and rats however breed year round so you will want to take care of these pests! With the cold winter weather comes many extra things for us to think about. Above all, be ready to check on family and neighbors who are especially at risk from cold weather hazards: young children, older adults, and the chronically ill. If you have pets, bring them inside. If you cannot bring them inside, provide adequate, warm shelter and unfrozen water to drink. Gunning Wildlife Removal & Pest Control provides affordable pest control and humane removal of wildlife from homes, businesses and properties. We serve Southwestern Ontario including Woodstock, London, Brantford, Kitchener, Waterloo,Stratford and surrounding areas. - Rabies in Ontario
In Ontario the most common animals to be affected by rabies are bats, foxes, skunks and raccoons. Once signs of rabies appear, in any animal, the disease is fatal. Dumb rabies causes animals to become depressed and isolate themselves. They may have paralyses causing drooling, drooping head, sagging jaw or strange vocal sounds. Furious rabies on the other hand causes animals to be extremely excited and aggressive. They may gnaw or bite its own body or limbs and attack other animals for no reason. If you or someone you know is bitten by an animal or if infectious material (such as saliva) from an animal gets into your eyes, nose, mouth, or broken skin, wash the area immediately and thoroughly with lots of soap and water. Washing immediately can greatly reduce the risk of infection. Contact your doctor or your local public health unit immediately, as they can help determine your risk of exposure to rabies. A series of vaccinations and treatment with rabies antibodies can prevent infection in humans in most cases if administered soon after exposure. Contact your veterinarian for information on when and how often to vaccinate your pets. The first booster vaccine for rabies is always due 12 months after the animal’s initial vaccine (this is called the “primary series”), but after that a rabies vaccine (“booster shot”) is only needed every one to three years, depending on the vaccine used.

- Don’t Call 9-1-1 for Pest Control!
If you have raccoons on your property, maybe try calling Gunning Wildlife Removal: 519-421-2677 or text 289-987-0390, instead of calling 9-1-1. Gunning Wildlife Removal & Pest Control provides affordable solutions for humane removal of wildlife and for pest control in Southwestern Ontario. Police are once again asking the public to stop calling 9-1-1 for non emergency calls. Recently the Oxford OPP were called by a homeowner after a raccoon was spotted down the side of the roadway. Police are continuing to being inundated with calls for service after people are spotting raccoons during the day. There is no need to contact 9-1-1. Homeowners who have issues with Raccoons on their property need to call a private animal removal service. It’s a common myth that a raccoon walking around during the day is sick or has rabies. It’s true that raccoons are mostly nocturnal, but they can be active during the day for many different reasons. Raccoons will come out during the day if there is a food source available at a particular time, if they have been frightened out of their daytime sleeping spot, or if there is high competition in the area at night from other nocturnal animals. Oxford OPP Detachment Commander Tony Hymers says these calls are tying up our resources. “The OPP does not have the equipment to trap and house live animals or transport wild animals. Calling 9-1-1 for raccoons, tie up the phone lines at the communications centre, waste taxpayer money, tie up law enforcement officers and threaten lives. A private animal removal service should be contacted instead of calling 9-1-1.”
