Ants and rodents are among the most active spring pests in Ontario.

Now that we’re halfway through spring, here are the most common pests in Southwestern Ontario this time of year.

  • Ants:

Spring is when ants emerge. They spend their winter in a dormant state waiting for temperatures to increase. Activity peaks in early-mid spring as they search for food. Treating ants is most effective when they’re present and active.

  • Mice and Rats:

Mouse and rat activity peaks in spring. As temperatures rise they are busy foraging, gathering nesting materials and breeding. We highly recommend rodent treatment in spring and also fall when mice and rats move indoors for the cold months.

  • Squirrels:

While active all year, squirrels are exceptionally busy through spring. They forage, nest and breed - having two separate litters per year. Exclusion services can be performed all year round, however during baby season we take extra precautions to keep mom and babies together.

  • Skunks:

Skunks emerge in late winter to early spring. They are excellent diggers and make their den under structures like porches, decks and sheds. By mid-spring they are busy caring for their litter. We are against live trapping during baby season and offer alternative measures to safely exclude skunks from your property.

  • Raccoons:

Between mating, denning and baby season they are most active in the spring months. It’s not uncommon to see raccoons during the day as the mothers forage more when nursing their babies. We aim to keep mom and babies safe when excluding raccoons from your home or property and will not trap or separate them.

  • Birds:

Early March to May is peak nesting season for nuisance birds (grackles, sparrows and starlings). Inspect your home, especially exhaust vents, for signs of damage or nesting materials. Exclusion is best done before eggs are laid or after baby birds have flown the nest.

Whatever the case may be, Gunning Wildlife Removal & Pest Control is here to help. We conduct a thorough inspection to determine the issue and treat accordingly, all in the same visit.
