How to Decipher Pest Noises

So you hear something in your home - what could the noise be? We'll help you decipher the different noises that pests can make.
Mice or Rats:
If a scratching or scurrying noise is coming from your walls or the ceiling between floors, it’s likely a rodent. They are most active at night when it’s quiet.
Squirrels:
If it sounds like something is digging, scratching or quickly scurrying back and forth in your attic, it’s likely a squirrel. Bigger than a mouse but smaller than a raccoon, they are most active at dusk and dawn.
Raccoons:
Raccoons are known to make scratching and thumping sounds - it would sound like a larger animal is in your attic. They are typically sleeping or out foraging during the day and active at night. Infant raccoons make a noisy chirping sound.
Carpenter Ants:
If you hear crunching or crackling sounds coming from wooden baseboards, window frames or door frames, it’s probably a colony of carpenter ants. They are most active at night and during damp conditions from Spring to Fall.
