How Heat Waves Affect Pest Activity in Ontario

Summer heat waves have a significant effect on pest activity in Ontario.

1. Ants, Wasps, Hornets, Earwigs, Millipedes:

Extreme heat speeds up their life cycles, causing a boost in their population. It also increases their metabolic rate causing them to forage more aggressively. Insects will also try to take refuge from the heat in cooler areas like homes and basements.

2. Mice and Rats:

Rodents rely on water sources to regulate their body temperature. When the ground is dry they are forced to seek alternative sources like drains, leaky pipes and A/C units. They will seek refuge from the daytime heat by sticking close to cool basements and air-conditioned buildings, saving their energy for night time foraging.

3. Raccoons, Squirrels, Skunks:

During high heat events, wildlife are forced to find cool spaces to hide. This often leads to closer contact with humans as they rest under sheds, decks, porches or inside soffits or structures. To avoid dehydration they may be drawn to ponds, pools and birdbaths. Even their dietary needs change - they forage for high moisture foods like lawn grubs and compost.
