Fall Pest Checklist: 6 Pests to Watch for as Temperatures Drop

Now that we’re in the midst of fall, here are 6 pests to watch for in your home as the temperatures drop outside.
Mice and Rats:
Cooler weather will drive mice and rats to seek warmth, shelter and food. Your home has the perfect setup. Watch for easy access gaps around your roof, foundation, pipes, vents and underneath doors. Droppings, gnaw marks and scratching or scurrying sounds in walls and ceilings are telltale signs of an infestation. Common areas they inhabit include: attics, basements, garages and kitchens.
Ants:
Fall is the last push for ants to gather food before sealing up their colonies and going dormant for winter. Sticky spills, crumbs, pet bowls and leaky pipes attract ants. If the colony is inside your home, the ants may stay active all year round as the warmth delays dormancy.
Spiders:
Fall is the most common time of year to see spiders in your home - and not for the reasons you think. Male spiders leave their hiding spots this time of year in search of a partner. Additionally, outdoors spiders can find their way inside as they follow their prey.
Wasps and Yellowjackets:
Wasps and yellowjackets are highly aggressive this time of year, especially on those warmer days. Late summer to early fall, their natural food sources have diminished and nests are overcrowded, resulting in closer contact with humans.
Boxelder Bugs:
While harmless, boxelder bugs are a nuisance and can gather in the hundreds. As temperatures drop they seek warmth and typically end up on brick walls, siding or screens that have been warmed by the sun. It’s also not uncommon to find them indoors as they follow the heat.
Stink Bugs:
Similar to boxelder bugs, stink bugs follow the heat. It’s common to find them gathering
on brick walls, siding and screening that’s been warmed by the sun. They are harmless but pesky, and emit a strong odour if they’re crushed. They can end up indoors as they follow the heat and look for a place to overwinter.
